Methacrylic acid (I) was prepd. by vapor phase oxidn. in the presence of catalytic mixts. of heteropoly acids or their salts comprising MoaVbPcQdZeOf (Q = k, Rb, Cs, Tl; Z = Cu, As W, Al, Sn, Th, Ge, Ni etc. when a = 10, then 0<b<6, c = 0.5-6 0<d<=1.5, e = 0.5, f = values required). Thus, an aq. mixt. of MoO3 100, V2O5 6.3, H3PO4 8, and CsOH 1 g was boiled for 3 hr and dried to give, after crushing to 24-48 mesh, a catalyst of Mol0V2P1Cs0.1 oxidn. A gaseous mixt. (II) which had a mol. ratio of MeCHO: O2:N2:H2O, as 1:2.5:14:7, was passed at 1600 hr-1 space velocity and 330≦̸C over the catalyst to give 68.1% with 90.4% conversion of II and 75.3% selectivity for I.
