To facilitate the packing of articles of various sizes and to save on unnecessary added packing material (Styropore chips, paper etc.), time, transport space, transport costs involved with the previously necessary multitude of boxes of the widest variety of sizes and types, the "folding box of variable width and length" is pushed together in length and width to the precise size of the article to be packed, so that there is no free space between article and box. This is achieved by a "folding box of variable width and length" which comprises four parts, of which two in each case are of the same kind. Two different parts in each case are pushed one into the other in such a way that a closed square base outline is obtained, which can be varied by pushing apart and/or pushing one into the other the length and/or width (for example, max. base size 42 x 30 cm to min. base size 23 x 17 cm).
