The invention relates to a method for measuring the liquid level of electrically conductive media in liquid containers where the liquid level changes, according to which method the liquid level is measured with respect to a predetermined zero level by measuring the capacitance of a coaxial capacitor whose negative electrode can be formed by the electrically conductive medium. The invention also relates to a device for carrying out the method, which device consists of a core (1) which is sheathed by an insulating layer (2), is produced from an electrically conductive material and, when immersed in the conductive medium forms a capacitor (6) having an earth electrode which is formed by the electrically conductive material, by means of which method and device level and filling-level measurements can be carried out in electrically conductive media, especially water, even when there is a layer of a non-conductive medium, such as oil, for example, floating on the liquid surface of the conductive medium, without the measurement result being adversely affected by the non-conductive medium or incorrect measurements occurring. <IMAGE>
