The invention relates to a process and to equipment for producing metal powder by atomisation of a molten metal stream by means of a resonator vibrating at ultrasonic frequency and subsequent cooling of the molten particles flung away by the resonator during their flight in a gas atmosphere. To achieve the object of reducing the spatial dimensions of known equipment and of improving the productivity and nevertheless obtaining a fine microstructure coupled with a narrow particle size spectrum, it is proposed according to the invention to subject the metal particles during their ballistic flight to at least one directional cooling gas flow essentially transversely to the direction of flight and to deflect them.
