The invention relates to a passive safety belt device for vehicles, in particular passenger vehicles, equipped with a vehicle engine and speed change gear, having a safety belt which is assigned to a vehicle seat and is held by at least one belt end on a runner which can be adjusted by means of a control drive in a guide attached to the vehicle frame between a position assigned to the storage position of the safety belt and a position assigned to the restraining position of the safety belt, it being possible to actuate the control drive as a function of the operating state of the vehicle and of the position of the vehicle door adjacent to the vehicle seat. In order to ensure an expedient control of the control drive, it is to be possible to actuate the latter additionally as a function of the position of a gear selection lever (14) which engages the gears of the speed change gear. <IMAGE>
