The present invention provides, in an artificial kidney system, a regulator (10) which maintains a pre-selected transmembrane pressure at a substantially constant value by controlling dialysate pressure in response to changes in a patient's venous blood pressure, said regulator comprising a force balanced diaphragm regulator, one side of said diaphragm forming part of a first enclosed chamber (35) adapted to be air coupled to the venous blood drip chamber (125) of said artificial kidney system, the other side of said diaphragm forming part of a second enclosed chamber (25a, 25b, 25c), said other side of said diaphragm being adapted to respond to changes in dialysate pressure, said first enclosed chamber including means responsive to changes in said venous blood pressure for biasing the controlled dialysate pressure in said second chamber, whereby a preselected transmembrane pressure is maintained. <IMAGE> |
