PURPOSE:To obtain a picture which has no fog, is stable over a long period of time, and also is scarcely varied by environment, by controlling the charge of a developer or the potential corresponding to it, to prescribed charge or surface potential. CONSTITUTION:A process for controlling the surface potential of toner particles on a sleeve 22 by use of a potential sensor 6 is performed prior to a developing process, so as to detect the surface potential of the toner particles on the sleeve 22 before developing an electrostatic latent image on a photosensitive drum. Before the image is exposed, the sleeve 22 is rotated as a pre-rotation process, a process for moving a uniform toner layer to a detecting position of the potential sensor is executed, and a prescribed surface potential state is obtained by controlling a voltage generating means 8 in the course of this process. Accordingly, the controlled contents of the voltage generating means 8 of the previous time are cleared, and it is reset so that it can be controlled. |
