Fouling in a heat exchanger for hydrocarbons was prevented by using 1-500 ppm polyalkenyl amine, e.q., polyisobutenyl amine at 0-1500↿F. Thus, oil was fed to a heat exchanger at the rate of 23000-25000 bbl/day and heated or condensed at 0-1500↿F. Fouling-preventive, e.q., plyisobutenyl amine of mol. wt. 1000-2000, polybuthenecarboxy amide and AF-600, was added to reduce fouling at 1000 bbl/day.
