PURPOSE:To obtain acetic acid efficiently by the use of methanol having fewer canbon atoms than acetic acid, by anaerobically cultivating a bacterium belonging to the genus Methanol bacteriaceae, capable of producing acetic acid, in a medium containing methanol and sulfate ion and collecting a product from the culture mixture. CONSTITUTION:A bacterium [e.g. Methano sarcina sp.(DSM 1825), etc.] belonging to the genus Methanol bacteriaceae, capable of producing acetic acid, is adsorbed on a porous carrier, etc., put in a cylindrical fermentation tank 1, fend to a culture solution 2 containing methanol and sulfate ion, anaerobically cultivated, a culture mixture thereof is transferred to a pH adjusting tank 6, adjusted to proper pH, the acetic acid producing mold in the culture solution 2 is separated by an ultrafilter 9, the mold is returned to the fermentation tank 2 and acetic acid is collected from the culture solution. |
