Citric acid reacts with choline bicarbonate in equimolar quantities, in aq. medium and at ambient temperature, to produce choline dihydrogen citrate. This then reacts with an aq. suspension of ferric hydroxide in 3:2 moles proportions, at 50 to 80 deq.C for between 6 and 12 hours to yield choline 2:3:3 ferric citrate. The yellow-green solid is precipitated with a mixture of acetone and methyl alcohol. It is used for treatment of iron deficiency.
