Before the machining process, the conicity of the reference workpiece (7) is measured and automatically taken over by the unit carrying out the machining, such that the workpiece (1) to be machined is machined, in terms of conicity, in a desired ratio to the reference workpiece (7). The error in conicity, caused by inaccuracies in, and alterations to, the machine tool carrying out the machining, can be corrected during the machining process. <IMAGE>
