Benzoyl chloride is reacted with alkali metal cyanide in the presence of carbonitriles and copper(I) salts at 50-160 DEG C, with the benzoyl chloride, where appropriate in a mixture with the carbonitrile, being initially introduced and the alkali metal cyanide, where appropriate together with the copper(I) salt, being fed in at the reaction temperature, and/or the alkali metal cyanide which is used having at least to half its extent, preferably at least to 80 %, a granule size which is less than 0.4 mm and otherwise a granule size which is less than 1.0 mm. Preferably 1.05-1.20 equivalents of cyanide are employed per mol of benzoyl chloride. The process is easy to carry out on an industrial scale and provides benzoyl cyanide in high yield and excellent purity. The benzoyl cyanide which is obtained is practically free from its dimers.
