A conventional cigarette filter according to the current state of the art is pretreated with an abovementioned, hygroscopically acting substance approved under food law or produced with the additional use of one of these substances. In a combination of this moist filter with conventional filters, a major part of the particle gas phase and gas vapour phase is condensed by the "water pipe effect".
