The invention relates to a method for coding articles using a coded label, in which the label is detached by deflecting the backing strip under tension about a deflecting edge or deflecting roller, furthermore the code contained on the label is checked before the label is applied to the article to be coded and, should the result of the check be negative, labelling is prevented. The invention consists in that, in the event of error detection, the front portion (16) of the label (2) which detaches at the deflecting edge is caused to adhere, behind the deflecting edge (4), to the portion (1, 23) of the backing strip (1) moving away from the deflecting edge (4). <IMAGE>
