To absorb the axial thrust developed by a refractory protective lining (3) of a rotary drum, e.g. of a rotary drum kiln used in the cement industry, holding elements (14) are proposed, which extend over the majority of the radial thickness of the protective lining (3) and are themselves connected to the casing (1) of the rotary drum via a ring (8) or via support bodies. To improve the heat removal, at least the casing (1) of the rotary drum in the region of the holding elements (14) is equipped with bores (7), it being possible to support by a blower a natural convection through the bore (7) or through hollow support bodies welded in the bores. <IMAGE>
