The invention relates to a device for inspecting the interior of pressure vessels of all sorts, in particular at high pressures and especially high or low temperatures. Because of the low tensile strength of transparent materials at high pressures, the use of windows in the vessel wall is not feasible, and in addition the field of view is often too small or the inspector too far removed from the object of inspection. The object of the invention is achieved when transparent pipes that are joined in a leakproof fashion to the wall of the pressure vessel and whose interior can be accessed from outside the vessel project therein. An optical system which has a corner mirror and through which the vessel interior can be inspected is inserted into the pipe interior. The vessel interior is illuminated through further transparent tubes using lamps or an optical fibre with the aid of the corner mirror. The observation device is suitable for observing measuring equipment, flow processes, chemical reactions, or else for controlling filters, sealing members, stirrers and much else besides in vessels of all sorts filled with gas or liquid.
