The wire feed device according to the invention comprises a housing in which two gripping means situated axially one behind the other are connected, in each case via a connecting part designed as a rod, to a displacement body. For this purpose, the said body has a circumferential groove in which the connecting part is guided by rolling bearings as in a slotted link. The wire to be fed to a welding system or the like is guided between spherical gripping elements coaxially to these parts of the means. The gripping elements each lie in the same plane, radially to the wire, in a frustoconical recess in a receptacle of the gripping means. When the displacement body is rotated, the oblique circumferential groove has the effect that one of the connecting parts is alternately displaced forwards with the associated gripping means in the feed direction of the wire or backwards, the gripping elements releasing the wire or being made to rotate and, as a result, taking the wire along in the feed direction.
