In telecommunications switching systems, the performance of conference calls among a plurality of subscribers is enabled with conferencing equipment. The circuit cost of known conferencing equipment is relatively high and balancing for different subscriber loop line lengths is not easy to implement. For adaptation of branches in a telecommunications system, the impedance of the subscriber loop which is to be connected is measured and a compensation circuit is inserted before connection of an additional subscriber terminal to an existing exchange connection between two subscribers. The compensation circuit and additional subscriber terminal are connected simultaneously to the existing exchange connection. A bridge balance with an adjustable impedance can be implemented for impedance measurement and compensation, and the impedance thus obtained can be supplied to a negative impedance converter.
