PURPOSE:To prevent the result of estimation of the most likelihood of a single pulse response from being in error by providing a transversal filter comprising a tapped delay line, a multiplier and an adder and a transmission characteristic estimation means forming a tap coefficient. CONSTITUTION:Plural correction outputs being the result of weighting each tap output of the tapped delay line 2 receiving a multi-value digital input signal from a transmission line by means of each tap coefficient (weighting value of a multiplier 3) are added to extract an equalized output signal by transversal filters 2, 3, 4 and each tap coefficient is formed by transmission characteristic estimation means 5, 6, 7. The transmission characteristic estimation means 5, 6, 7 use each tap output except the multivalue digital signal included in the predetermined width of error region placed at each median of ajdacent digital values so as to form a tap coefficient. Thus, the reduction in the correlation output caused by the polarity error of an error signal or an estimate signal is mitigated.
