HYDROFORMYLATION OF ALKENES TO ALDEHYDES

Aldehydes are produced by hydroformylating alkenes in the presence of a Rh complex catalyst. Process comprises (i) providing a hydroformylation zone contg. a liq. charge comprising (a) a Rh complex catalyst in which the Rh is complexed with CO and a triorganophosphine, (b) excess triorganophosphine, (c) liq. aldehyde and (d) polymeric aldehyde condensn. prods.; (ii) feeding liq. reactant alkene to the hydroformylation zone; (iii) also supplying make up H2 and CO; (iv) keeping the zone at alkene hydroformylation temp. and pressure conditions; (v) recovering an overhead vapour stream (vi) condensing unreacted alkene, aldehyde prod. and aldehyde condsn. prods. form the vapour stream.
