A workbench top for supporting scientific equipment requiring location on pillar feet or studs is assembled from two layers of rigid sheet separated by tubular spacers closed at their base, open at the top and aligned with holes through the upper layer of the sheets. The spacers accept the feet or studs of the overhead equipment, providing greater depth of support than merely the thickness of the upper layer of the twin layers of sheet. The upper sheet may be supported by annular flanges on the spacers located either around the top of the spacers or at a level below their top which pref. corresponds to the thickness of the top plate. The closed bore of the spacers contains any spillage entering the spacers from the worktop. Lighter than tops of equiv. stiffness having a single solid sheet for the top layer. Opt. the spacers are internally threaded to accept e.g. uprights for erecting bench scaffolding. Pref. the two layers are supported in turn by a layer of material of high specific stiffness, e.g. a honeycomb board structure, carried by a third rigid sheet, pref. of similar thickness to each of the pair forming the top of the bench.
|
