The subject-matter of the invention is a method and a device for separating a connecting line which is no longer required from a pipeline carrying gas, without interrupting the transportation of the gas. The invention is that the connecting line is separated directly above its connecting point to the pipeline by means of a cutting device which is mounted such that it can pivot on the pipeline, in such a way that the existing cut slot is automatically completely covered by the cutting tool itself or by a plate arranged behind the cutting tool, and that subsequently, once the cutting device has been pivoted out to the side, the opening of the remaining pipe connecting piece of the connecting line is closed in a gastight manner by means of a cover or a cap. <IMAGE>
