The device serves for the electrical stimulation of living tissue, such as organs of the body, muscles and nerves. The device can be mounted on the surface of the body or implanted in the body. The device has an electric circuit which contains a pulse width control device (41) for varying the intensity of stimulation, the pulse repetition frequency and the pulse duration for varying the pulse width. Variation of the pulse width causes the intensity of stimulation to vary in a prescribed mathematical fashion, so that it approximately follows the curves of intensity/duration or pulse stimulation amplitude versus pulse width. This enables optimum choice from among the various classes of stimulated nerve fibres inside a nerve bundle. Stimulation can be precisely adjusted, so that the feeling of the soothing of pain is optimised. <IMAGE>
