In a contact device, the end pieces of two stabilised high-current superconductors, which are to be cooled to a cryogenic operating temperature, are to be arranged between two clamping pieces, between which a predetermined clamping force can be set mechanically at the assembly temperature. In order to permit a low-resistance connection between the superconductor end pieces in a simple and cost-effective manner, the contact device according to the invention has clamping pieces (4, 5) with cross-sections like circular segments. These clamping pieces (4, 5) contain superconducting parts on their sides facing the end pieces (7, 8) of the superconductors, are surrounded in a force-fitting manner by a hollow-cylindrical frame element (3), and consist of a material having an average coefficient of expansion which is less than the average coefficient of expansion of the material of the frame element (3) so that, during the temperature transition from the assembly temperature to the operating temperature, an additional compression force is produced which is greater than the clamping force which is set mechanically. <IMAGE>
