Dissolved, emulsified and/or colloidal contaminants are removed from effluent liqs. using fine gas bubbles blown into a vertical section contg. the liq. mixed with the required chemicals. As it descends in a chamber for flocculation/coagulation/flotation the mixed liq. is mixed with fresh incoming liq. Risen solids are removed from the top of this chamber. In an adjacent settling chamber sludge is removed from the bottom and purified liq. from the top. Process can be regulated by the amt. of gas used. Appts. is also claimed. System is esp. for removing detergent, grease, oil and dirt from laundry effluent, and is applied in a single unit with no mechanical stirring. Recirculation of active flocculate reduces chemical consumption and produces less sludge.
