PURPOSE:To contract the scale of a feature dictionary and improve the recognizing speed, by arranging the registered parameter in a form which can contain plural elements simultaneously and the retrieval is performed when any one of the plural element components coincides. CONSTITUTION:As a feature dictionary 53, a storage device stores more than one registered parameters of each known pattern, which represent the feature of each pattern. Each component a1-a5 of the feature parameter is such a system that each component can contain three elements in maximum in relation with the OR. At a retrieving device 60, extracted parameters Zi (i=1-L) of character patterns to be recognized from a feature extracting device 52 are compared with registered parameters Xi for the coincidence, and when any one element out of the plural element components coincides, the plural element components are judged that they coincide with the corresponding part of the extracted parameters. Therefore, the scale of the feature dictionary can be contracted and at the same time, the retrieving speed of known patterns can be improved and influences of noises can be prevented. |
