A method for carrying out an automatic charging process of gas-proof nickel-cadmium accumulators arranged in closed spaces, which accumulators are preferably used in underwater vehicles, underwater stations, missiles or satellites, using a charging apparatus to produce a charging current. During the charging process, the temperatures of the accumulators and of a temperature sensor which senses a reference temperature which is representative of the closed room are determined by metrology. By forming the difference between the determined temperatures, a temperature response is calculated which, independently of external temperature influences, exhibits an endothermic state of the accumulators during the first charging phase and, as charging proceeds, changes into an exothermic state of the accumulators. By differentiating the curve response, a state variable is obtained which is used as the criterion for switching off the charging process. <IMAGE>
