The invention relates to a heating process for utilising the upper calorific value of fuels, in particular for a low-temperature heater, in which fuel is burned in a heating device with formation of combustion gas and the combustion gases formed initially flow upwards or sideways in the heating device, and it is characterised in that the combustion gases are passed downwards in a part of their flow path with precipitation of condensate. The precipitation of condensate takes place on surface-coated heating surfaces which have, as the coating, preferably a corrosion-resistant dense metal, for example an electrodeposited layer of chromium-nickel or the like, but especially an electrodeposited gold layer. At the outlet, the combustion gases then have a temperature of only 40 DEG C to 45 DEG C.
