The device is mounted on the slide rest of an automatic lathe. The housing (5) is movably arranged relative to the supporting plate (6) rigidly fastened to the slide rest. Mounted in the housing is a drive shaft (3) with cams (9, 10 and 11), the interaction of which with corresponding rollers (12, 27 and 28) ensures the working stroke, the setting and the withdrawal of the tool. In the working position of the device, the axis of the drive shaft (3) is parallel to the circumferential surface of the thread to be turned. The tool holder (1) is displaceably arranged in the housing (5) and is kinematically connected to the drive shaft (3). The holder (1) moves in the housing (5) in the plane perpendicular to the axis of the drive shaft (3) and performs together with the housing (5) a movement parallel to the axis of the same shaft (3). The housing (5) is displaced by the working-stroke roller (12) which interacts with the corresponding cam (9) and is arranged on the slide (14) which is arranged on the supporting plate (6) in such a way that it can be displaced parallel to the axis of the drive shaft (3) and is constructed in such a way that it can be arrested.
