1,7-Octadiene is prepared by hydrodimerizing butadiene in the presence of formic acid or a salt thereof, optionally a solvent and a catalytic amount of palladium and a first ligand having the formula (RO)aPRb and a second ligand having the formula (RO)a,PRb, wherein a + b equals 3, a is 0, 1 or 2, a min + b min equals 3, a min is 0, 1, 2 or 3, a ist not the same as a min , wherein the R groups, which may be the same or different, attached to the phosphorus or oxygen atoms, are organic groups and wherein at least one R group of said first ligand is a sterically hindering group selected from benzyl or branched alkyl, aralkyl, alkenyl or cycloalkyl groups having from 3 to about 10 carbon atoms with branching occurring at a carbon atom no more than two carbon atoms from the phosphorus atom. |
