To allow continuous operation of an apparatus for filling bags, the latter is preceeded by a storage device, serving as a buffer, for holding a multiplicity of bundles of bags, which must have a compact structure in combination with a high storage capacity. The storage device according to the invention is formed from a multiplicity of vertically displaceable pallet-like support plates which are connected movably to one another, to which support plates bundles of bags are supplied and from which the said bundles are removed by means of a horizontally displaceable bundle slide which lies in the region of the common supply and discharge level of the support plates. Each support plate is provided with a central penetration in which the bundle slides, which are formed from pneumatic cylinders, can be displaced for the purpose of transporting the bundles. To supply the storage device, the individual support plates are moved successively into the supply level and are supplied from the side. To remove bundles of bags, the support plates are moved successively into the discharge level corresponding to the supply level. By means of the bundle slide, the bundles are then ejected at the side opposite to the supply point. <IMAGE>
