The invention serves for preventing accidents with semi-automatic firearms. It consists of a method and a device. The method is characterised by the use of a manoeuvre cartridge (a cartridge with a propellent charge, but without a projectile) as the uppermost cartridge in the firearm magazine. To guarantee the automatic reloading of the following <<live>> cartridge, the device (see drawing 1) is attached to the muzzle of the firearm. This closes the barrel, so that the case of the manoeuvre cartridge is ejected as a result of the gas backpressure and the following (live) cartridge is reloaded. The device is pierced by the projectile of this cartridge. The method, in conjunction with the device, is suitable for preventing most of the accidents occurring with semi-automatic firearms, since these are mainly caused by the first shot which, however, is not live when the method is used. <IMAGE>
