In (I), R1 is H, 1-12C alkyl, 3-8C cycloalkyl, (1-8C)alkyl-(3-8C)cycloalkyl, (3-8C)cycloalkyl-(1-8C)alkyl, (1-8C)alkoxy-(1-8C)alkyl, 2-8C alkenyl, 3-8C cycloalkenyl, (3-8C)cycloalkenyl-(1-8C)alkyl, Ph, cyano-(1-8C)alkyl, 2-8C alkynyl, 1-8C alkylideneamino, (1-8C)alkylthio-(1-8C)alkyl, benzyl, 1-8C haloalkyl or 3-8C cycloalkylideneamino; R2 is H, 1-8C alkyl or 1-8C alkoxy; X is Cl or Br; Y is O or NH; and Z is O or S. Intermediates of formula (II) are also new. (W is NO2 or NH2). Cpds. (I) are pre- and post-emergence herbicides with a selective action against broad-leaf and graminaceous weeds in corn, soyabean, rice crops, etc. Appled at 0.01-100 g/are. 2-(4-Chloro-2-fluoro-5 -methoxycarbonyl methoxyphenyl)-4,5,6,7-tetrah ydro-2H-indole-1,3-dione (Ia) and the corresp. 5-pentyloxy carbonylmethoxy and 5-cyclopentyl methylimino cpds. are specifically claimed. -
