1-R 2,2-di-(ZOOC-) 3-acetyl 4-oxo-azetidine derivs. of formula (III). Intermediates (IIa) and their tautomers (IIb) are also new. (where R is a protecting gp. or aryl and Z is alkyl). - (III) (R is aryl) have anti-hypoxic activity and III (R is a protecting gp.) are intermediates for thienamycin, which is a known broad spectrum antibiotic (see US3950357 and DE2751597). Use of (III) allows production of thienamycin in higher yields and by an easier method than known processes. B
