A facsimile system comprising a data run-length generator circuit (50) for generating a run-length and a ROM table (21) for coding a run-length into compressed data. For decoding, the system comprises a sequence controller (4) which causes the run-length generator to apply a sequence of run-lengths to the ROM table and a comparator (51) which compares the corresponding sequence of compressed data from the ROM table with the received item of compressed data to be decoded. When the comparator recognises a coincidence, the reproduced data or run-length data corresponding to the received compressed data is known from the point in the sequence which has been reached.
