A cylindrical filter element (12) for a cigarette is wrapped in a ventilated tipping wrapper (16) which is spaced from the filter element (12) by a raised pattern of thermoplastic material (19) printed on the inner surface of the wrapper (16). The pattern is designed to provide air channels (14) communicating with the ventilations (17) in the wrapper (16) and leading to the mouth end (15) of the filter (12). This enables the manufacturer to dispense with a separate spacing member which has hitherto been located between the filter (12) and the tipping wrapper (16).

The invention includes a method of making a filter element including such a raised pattern.
