Sex pheromone of the olive fly, Daws oleae, is used as an attractant in methods for the monitoring and control of the fly. The pheromone has the chemical mane 1,7-dioxaspiro (5,5)undecane (abbreviated to DSU). Prepn. of DSU comprises self-condensing delta-vabrolactone (II) under basic conditions, followed by acidification. The prod. is a racemic mixt. of (Ia) and (Ig). A trap for male D.oleac, e.g. a window trap comprises an effective amt. of DSU and conventional means for retaining the fly in the trap e.g. adhesive surfaces or a tortuous path to the exit, or for killing e.g. one or more insecticides or an electrically charged grid. Generally about 1-100 mg of DSU are used per trap. The trap may also contain the sex pheromone of Prays oleae, the olive moth, viz. Z-7-tetradecenal.
|
