Fuelling apparatus comprises an inclined beam A1 rotatable about a vertical axis at the centre of a servicing chamber 10 and supporting on guideways a fuel element handling machine A2 whereby by rotating the beam and traversing the machine a grab A3 may be lowered through a selected guide tube 16 of a grid plate 14 into a channel 18 of the reactor core 20. The machine A2 moves in a radially outward direction along the beam A1 under gravity and is moved in the radially inward direction by a cable driven by a hoist 50 in an operating chamber 51. The grab is controlled by a hoist 74. The machine A2 carries a T.V. camera 86, Fig. 3 (not shown). Spent fuel elements may be deposited in wells 104, 108 for cooling off prior to their removal through tunnels 106 by machines 92. For maintenance purposes the machine A2 may be lifted by the hoist 50 together with a shield plug 57 into the chamber 51 as indicated by dotted lines 51.</p> |
