(Z)-3,7-dimethyl-2,7-octadien-1-yl propanoate of the formula (I> <IMAGE> is obtained by converting nerol (II> <IMAGE> into an ester (III), wherein R<1> represents a C1-C5 straight-chained or branched acyl group, treating the ester (III) with a peracid in an inert solvent, reducing the epoxide (IV) thus obtained, <IMAGE> with a metal hydride, acylating the (Z)-1 ,7-dihydroxy-3,7-dimethyl-2-octene (V) thus obtained <IMAGE> at the primary hydroxyl group with propanoic acid or with a reactive derivative thereof, preferably under cooling, treating the compound (VI) thus obtained <IMAGE> with an alkyl- or arylsulfonyl halide in the presence of a base, at a temperature between -20 DEG C and +25 DEG C, and separating the compound of the formula (I) thus obtained from the reaction mixture. |
