PURPOSE:To eliminate factors of deterioration in strength at a connection part and to improve mechanical strength by forming films of silicone oil at outer circumference of optical fibers before the end surfaces of the optical fibers are fusion-connected mutually, and then making the mutual fusion connection between the end surfaces. CONSTITUTION:Coatings 2A and 2B are removed from the end parts of a couple of coated optical fibers 3A and 3B to expose optical fibers 3A and 3B. Then, the remaining coating materials of the removed coatings 2A and 2B are wiped off from the exposed parts of the fibers 3A and 3B by using an organic solvent such as acetone. Then, composite paper impregnated with silicone oil is used to wipe the fibers 3A and 3B from which the coatings 2A and 2B are removed softly, thus forming films of silicone oil. The tips of the fibers 3A and 3B are cut nearly at right angles to obtain adequate butt end surfaces 4A and 4B. Those end surfaces 4A and 4B are butted against each other and the fibers 3A and 3B are fusion-connected by arc discharge by discharging electrodes 5M and 5N, thus improving the mechanical strength of the connection part. |
