PURPOSE:To manufacture a constant polarization type optical fiber with superior characteristics by putting a composite body composed of a base materal for an optical fiber having grooves at both sides in the longitudinal direction and of a pair of glass rods fixed in the grooves into a quartz glass pipe, melting them by heating, and drawing the resulting base material. CONSTITUTION:Saddle-shaped grooves are cut at both sides of a base material for an optical fiber formed by covering a preform core 1 with a preform clad 2 made of quartz glass, and glass rods 6a, 6b are fixed in the grooves to form a core member 4. The member 4 is put into a quartz glass pipe 5, and they are melted by heating, stuck together, and united in a body to obtain a base material 9 for a constant polarization type optical fiber. The base material 9 is drawn to manufacture a constant polarization type optical fiber 10 composed of a core 7, an elliptical clad 11 and a quartz glass layer 8 coating the clad 11. |
