Pyridine derivs. I (Y = H, Cl), starting materials for manufg. herbicidal compds. III (Z = CF3, ClCF2; R1 = H, C1-4 alkyl; R2 = CN, COOH, carboxamido), were prepd. from compds. II (X1 = H, Cl, Br) by sequential treatment with HCl(g) and UV irradn. with Cl. Thus, 2-chloro-5-trichloromethylpyridine was prepd. from 3-methylpyridine by chlorination and UV irradiation.
