Propellent charge powder with a smoothing surface coating

The particles of a single-base or multi-base propellent charge powder for ammunition are coated with a titanium chelate complex, for example titanium acetylacetonate. The coating is effected by spraying with the dissolved titanium chelate complex and subsequently moving the propellent charge powder at an elevated temperature. As a result of the coating, the bulk density of the propellent charge powder is markedly increased over that of a propellent charge powder surface-treated only with graphite. In addition, the coating also has an effect inhibiting barrel erosion and, in the case of multi-base propellent charge powders, an effect inhibiting exudation. The proportion by weight of the titanium chelate complex is about 2% by weight, relative to the uncoated propellent charge powder.
