In a process for producing a mixture of hydrocarbons rich in benzene, toluene and xylene, a fossil fuel is converted to a synthesis gas which in turn is catalytically reduced to oxygenated hydrocarbons. The oxygenated hydrocarbons are then contacted with a ZSM-5 type zeolite to produce a hydrocarbon stream, which is thereafter contacted with a catalyst comprising a metal promoted porous crystalline zeolite having a constraint index within the range 1 to 12 and a silica to alumina ratio of at least 12 under conditions to produce an effluent stream rich in benzene, toluene and xylene, and other aromatic compounds. The benzene, toluene and xylene and said other aromatic compounds are subsequently removed from said effluent stream. |
