Process and apparatus for the recoilless opening of a toroidal outer elastomer sheathing in tyre production, into which a green- cover is introduced before vulcanising. The tensioning members, effecting the opening of the sheath, are arranged peripherally on a base body and engage behind an inner rim of the sheath, being able to carry out both an outwardly directed opening movement and a vertical swivelling movement until there is complete, flush termination with the workplate. The tensioning members are designed, mounted and driven in such a way that it is not possible for the tensioning members to recoil if the sheath tears. For this purpose, the tensioning members may either comprise lowerable cabanes, from which essentially horizontally driven, relaxed tensioning bands emerge or the tensioning members have a semicircular rigid form which is positively guided and driven.
