In a thread brake for a two-for-one twisting spindle, comprising a slip-on tube (14) arranged on the supporting tube (12) of the two-for-one twisting spindle coaxially with the spindle axis, a brake housing (18) arranged on the slip-on tube (14) coaxially with it, two pressure pieces (42, 48) arranged adjustably relative to one another within the brake housing (18) in the direction of the spindle axis and having concave braking faces (44, 56) facing one another and surrounding a thread-passage channel, a brake cartridge (60) arranged between the braking faces (44, 56), and a catching device (90) for retaining the brake cartridge (60) in a threading-in position freeing the thread-passage channel for pneumatic threading in, the brake cartridge (60) has, in its head part (66) intended for bearing on the upper braking face (56), a recess (92) directed obliquely downwards in relation to the spindle axis, while the catching device has a mandrel (90b) which, starting from the tube wall (54) surrounding the brake cartridge (60), extends parallel to the axis of the recess (92) and engages into the latter. <IMAGE>
