Crystalline cephalothin sodium of the formula I is prepared by carrying out the following steps: a) dissolving 20 to 40 % (weight/weight) cephalothin sodium in a solvent consisting of 2 to 10 % C1-C3-alcohol or acetone and 98 to 90 % water (volume/volume); b) cooling the resulting solution to -20 DEG C or lower; c) heating the resulting preparation to -3 to -10 DEG C; d) maintaining the temperature of the preparation at -3 to -10 DEG C for 3 hours or longer; e) cooling the resulting preparation to -20 DEG C or lower; f) reducing the pressure of the environment, in which the preparation obtained in accordance with e) is located, to maximally 1 mm Hg; g) raising the temperature of the environment, in which the preparation obtained in accordance with f) is located, to maximally 50 DEG C while avoiding melting this preparation, and h) subliming the solvent of the resulting preparation up to a moisture content of the crystals of cephalothin sodium which are formed of at most 1.0 % and to a content of alcohol or acetone of at most 1.0 %. The product which is obtained can be used for preparing agents for parenteral administration. <IMAGE>
