Compounds of the formula <IMAGE> are prepared by a) reacting the corresponding alpha -alkyl-m- or p-methoxyphenyl-acetonitrile with concentrated hydrobromic acid and b) reacting the resulting, corresponding alpha -alkyl-m- or p-hydroxyphenylacetic acid with chlorodifluoromethane in an alkaline dioxane/water mixture. In formula I, R2 denotes ethyl, n-propyl or isopropyl. The substituent of the formula HCF2O- is in the m or p position in relation to the alkanoic acid group. The compounds of the formula I are starting products for the preparation of their new m-phenoxybenzyl and alpha -cyano-m-phenoxybenzyl esters. These esters are suitable for controlling insects and mites.
