In a window lifter (10) for motor vehicles, with a driver (16) engaging on a window pane, with a sliding piece (24) connected to the driver and mounted displaceably on a guide rail (26), and with a rope drive (12) for displacing the driver (16) along the guide rail (26), it is proposed to mount the driver (16) on the sliding piece (24) so as to be displaceable in the longitudinal direction (X) of the guide rail (26), specifically in a simple way in that the driver (16) is fastened to a bearing part which is itself mounted displaceably in the longitudinal direction (X) on the sliding piece (24). This ensures, by simple means, an increase in the stroke of the window lifter for a predetermined length (c) of the guide rail (26), whilst preserving the mechanical stability of the window lifter in respect of tilting movements of the window pane which lie in the plane of the window pane. A steel-band loop (44) is preferably used as a bearing part. In a further embodiment, the steel band is displaceably mounted directly in the guide rail designed as a C-rail, a deflection for the band being provided at at least one end of the guide rail. <IMAGE>
