The invention relates to 2-(substituted phenoxy)-propionic acid derivatives of the formula <IMAGE> in which R1 is <IMAGE> and R2 is a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group. They have a strong herbicidal action against weeds, in particular graminaceous weeds, and have low or no phytotoxicity towards broad-leaved crop plants and are therefore suitable as selective herbicides. The invention also relates to a process for controlling undesired plants and to a herbicidal composition using the above derivatives.
